Welcome to the Ottawa Art Gallery.  As a public art gallery, the OAG is a space for reflection and respectful dialogue. We believe that art plays an important role in addressing and helping us to better understand the complex, global challenges of our time. To that end, we prioritize care in all we do and we condemn all forms of hate.

How do we interact with the places we inhabit? Whether it be our homes, the wider community, or even our perceptions of self, this exhibition explores place as it exists through sensory experiences, between boundaries and memories, and across a set of ongoing, changing relationships.

Exploring the intricate intersections of art, motherhood, and societal perspectives, the exhibited works vary significantly, mirroring the unique lived experiences of Mothers/Artists.

Examining our relationship to the spaces we move through in our day to day lives, the artworks presented in this exhibit show different perspectives on how we impact a space through our presence or our absence, and how those spaces shape us in turn.

The Firestone Collection of Canadian Art is a significant art collection that spans the modern period and includes work from a wide range of Canadian art styles, geographical regions, and periods. The two largest themes represented in the collection are landscape and abstraction.

Come to the Jackson Café to discover two large murals, featuring the digital artwork of Eric Chan (aka eepmon).

This piece is a digitization of a birch bark biting that has then been reproduced through risograph printing. The biting can be interpreted as chickadees flying around flowers.

Photo : OAG / @chrissnowvideo

OAG COLLECTION STORY ✨

Did you know? This work by @marthakyak is the first wearable work to enter OAG’s collection.

A sakiaguti is a curved Inuit adornment that was traditionally placed over an amauti: a woman’s parka with a pouch to carry a baby. It is made of several ...materials, including beads that form a long contemporary fringe, and sealskin, a very dense, warm and waterproof material that is integral to Inuit culture and a means of subsistence in the North.

Kyak is a designer from Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet), NU, who has been building her fashion line InukChic in Ottawa, ON, blending traditional Inuit designs with contemporary influences. Although sewing skills are passed down through the women in Kyak’s family — including her mother whose original pattern was used to make this work — fashion is also a form of self-portraiture and community expression.

This work will soon be on view at the @natgallerycan for the exhibition Radical Stich (May 17 - October 20, 2024), organized and circulated by the @mackenzie.art.gallery.

🎨 Martha Kyak, ᓴᑭᐊᒍᑎ [Sakiaguti], 2021, sealskin, beads, felt, appliqué. Collection of the Ottawa Art Gallery: Purchased with the support of the Elizabeth L. Gordon Art Program, a program of the Gordon Foundation and administrated by the Ontario Arts Foundation, as well as with the generous support of the RBC Foundation through RBC Emerging Artists, 2023. Photo: OAG / @chrissnowvideo
