All things being equal. is the graduate thesis exhibition of work by Jessica Bell, MFA candidate in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Ottawa. Through the aesthetic potential of discarded objects, Bell addresses formalist concerns. Turning to the surrounding environment, she mines the possibility in items that she sees around her, such as canvas stretchers, textiles and wood fragments. Considering the found and abandoned fragment as the basis for abstract composition, her works in painting, collage, fibre, installation, photography and video function as encounters between these items and her willingness to engage with them. In addition to employing the effects of gravity and natural light to give shape to her material explorations, Bell welcomes both accident and failure as opportunities to express formal eloquence and metaphor within the physical qualities of the gallery space.
