OAG Annex at the City Hall Gallery

We are happy to announce we have accepted Mayor Jim Watson's invitation to program the City Hall Art Gallery from 2014 to 2016. A complement to the Karsh-Masson Gallery next door, the OAG Annex provides an opportunity for City Hall visitors to learn more about the OAG.

Laura Kaardal: Across the Intersection

April 16 – June 26, 2016

Opening Reception: May 5, 2016, 5:30 PM

A fresh perspective on something familiar has the ability to capture minds to take notice of commonplace surroundings.

Laura Kaardal is inspired by cities, and the buildings and infrastructure built to accommodate the volume of people who live there. When populations grow, some buildings maintain their presence as the rest of the city transforms around them. Buildings, sidewalks, and even trees we encounter everyday have stood through decades of change. Whether old or new, architecture is the backdrop of our everyday environment. Kaardal’s work captures these settings in an ordinary moment, in a style that is simple and direct.

Painting in a representational style based off of her own photography, Kaardal records each scene with the simplicity of colour and line. By selectively omitting natural textures and shading, her works become two-dimensional glimpses relying mostly on line, perspective, and colour to leave the viewer with a vivid impression. Taking inspiration from Caillebotte and Hopper, this style highlights the basic lines and geometry of the architecture. Kaardal’s realistic style speaks to the presence of architecture as the setting for daily life in the city.
