Karen Bailey paints behind-the-scenes workers and under-recognized people. In 2007 she traveled to Afghanistan as an appointed military artist. Her current body of work focuses on the working life of Canadian military medical personnel and the patients they care for at the Role 3 Hospital in Kandahar.


David Barbour

David Barbour teaches photography at SPAO and the Ottawa School of Art and balances commercial assignments and personal projects in both Ottawa and Halifax. Highlights to his career include a World Press Award (1986) and a Mid-Career Canada Council Grant (1999). This photograph, taken on a 6x12 camera with film and printed on Ilford Warmtone Fiber paper in March 2009, is the first image he took in Halifax and is part of an evolving series he calls Home.

Miguel Berlanga was born in 1951 Madrid, Spain but has lived and worked in Outaouais since his arrival in Canada in 1972. From 1979 to 1984, he worked under the name of A&B Associés with René-Pierre Allain. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Canada and abroad. He has received numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. In 2005, he was invited to be a member of the Royal Canadian Academy.

Alexandre Castonguay's art practice is based in digital and photographic media. His work will be included in the 2009 Biennale de Montréal, and have been exhibited internationally in Madrid, Berlin, Beijing and São Paulo. His work is found in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Canada Council Art Bank, and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. Past exhibitions include Musée d'art contemporain (Montréal), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Musée d'art urbain, and Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain.

Shannon Craig takes inspiration from the visual structure of Canadian landscapes and subtle beauty of urban environments. Chantal Dahan was born and raised in France and now lives in Quebec. She holds a Master's degree in visual and new media arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal. In 2008, she was awarded a prize by the Centre d'artistes Voix Visuelle for its Third Annual International Digital Miniprint Exhibition. In 2004 and 2008 she was awarded the Prize of Excellence, “New Technologies", by the Fondation pour les arts, les lettres et la culture de l'Outaouais. Her latest photographic images examine the culture and identity of a region of rural West Quebec. Her works have been presented in Quebec, Canada and abroad, and form part of both private and public collections.

Lorraine Gilbert has been producing photographic artworks and exhibiting since 1979. Her most recent body of work, entitled Le Patrimoine, was shown this past winter at the Carleton University Art Gallery. Adrian Göllner

Technique: My 3.5 year-old son has a Hot Wheels set entitled Tornado Alley, which features a toy tornado gyroscope. The goal is to launch Hot Wheels cars at the tornado to knock it off balance before it lays waste to a parking lot. I lay carbon paper over drawing paper and then released the tornado on top, allowing it to meander and draw until it stopped spinning and fell over. The resulting drawing is the path of the tornado's destruction.

 

Adrian Göllner has been described as a site-specific satirist. Employing a variety of mediums and techniques in a chameleon-like adaptation, Göllner combines Cold War imagery, graphing techniques, and references to Modernism in artworks that critique North American consumer culture. He exhibits nationally and internationally, and has received several public art commissions, including one for the new Canadian Embassy in Berlin.

Vera Greenwood was born and raised in Calgary and now lives in the Gatineau Hills of Québec. She has a Diploma of Visual Art from the Alberta College of Art and Design (Calgary), as well as a Master of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University (Montréal), both specializing in printmaking. Over the past 15 years Greenwood's printmaking background has developed into a multi-media installation practice. Her work has been widely exhibited across Canada and internationally. Danny Hussey received a BFA from NSCAD University in 1990. In 2002 Hussey was short listed for the RBC Canadian Painting Competition. David McKenzie

David McKenzie has been working with clay in the Ottawa area since 1974 and in the village of Wakefield since 1990 with his partner Maureen Marcotte. Previously having shown his work in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto, it can now mostly be seen at Galerie McKenzie Marcotte in Wakefield. His work in high-fired porcelain is known for its intensely painted surfaces, using a rich palette of glaze colours and textures. A whimsical sense of design and a lyrical drawing line infuse each unique piece with warmth and intimacy.

Cynthia O'Brien is an active member in the Ottawa arts community, participating in Blink Gallery, CAT and 260 Fingers. In regards to her piece Stimulus (2009), O'Brien states that she feels that whereas humans tend base our relationships on emotion, the natural world bases relationships on survival. She enjoys mirroring her emotional trials with that of nature's unquestioning cycle of birth, survival and death. In this springtime piece the celestial configuration of Virgo is needling the young sperm to get a move on!

Annie Thibault lives and works in Gatineau, Quebec. Following her initial training in sciences, she recieved a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Université du Québec en Outaouais. Since 1995, she has been creating installations that intersect art and science in collaboration with research and educational microbiology centres in Canada and abroad (Barcelona, Spain and Helsinki, Finland). Her work was recently included in the exhibition Intrus/Intruders at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (2008-2009) and in Dé-con-structions / De-con-structions at the National Gallery of Canada (2007). Her work forms part of public collections including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the City of Ottawa, and the Ottawa Art Gallery.

The photo-based practice of Jeff Thomas focuses on illuminating the First Nations urban experience, and to challenge perceptions and stereotypes of First Nations people. Howie Tsui is an Ottawa-based artist who was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Nigeria and Thunder Bay. He received his BFA in 2002 from the University of Waterloo and has exhibited in Canada, US, Australia, Denmark and Mexico. He was the recipient of the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2004 and has received project funding from all levels of government. Tsui is currently developing a new series entitled Horror Fables that will debut at Carleton University Art Gallery in April, followed by exhibitions at Ace Art Inc., Winnipeg; and Khyber ICA, Halifax.
