Pigeons are the wildlife of our cities. We watch them go about their daily business as we go about ours. There are those who feed them and those who hate them. The Pigeon Homing Project is a kind of adoption agency for city pigeons based on homing pigeons and their keepers. Rather than adopt a real bird, participants will adopt a life-size painting of a real pigeon living in an urban location. The painting is to be done at floor level, directly on the wall of the participant's home. Participants will choose which pigeon they would like to adopt from a file of pigeons painted on paper, and the painting will be copied onto the wall of their home. The file painting of that particular bird will then be rubber-stamped; "HOME" and the bird's new address will be added to the painting. Of course each bird can only be adopted once. Each painting will be unique, based on a different live pigeon. As the pigeons are homed, the file will develop as a record of the birds' locations. |
