AVERT YOUR EYES, STARE BACK
Thu May 19, 2005, Club SAW, 67 Nicholas
7:30pm - 9:30pm, Free Admission
Curated by the Available Light Screening Collective (Ottawa) in conjunction with the Ottawa Art Gallery exhibition Off Grid /Hors Circuit

A program of contemporary Canadian experimental film and video that offers a resistant response to the controls - both literal and metaphorical - imposed by the current culture of surveillance. The first artistic response, best described as "sousveillance", reframes technology and the tools of surveillance to allow the surveyed to become the surveyor. The second response, based in performative video, challenges normalized modes of public and private behaviours and the social control that surveillance culture commands.

Though different in their aesthetic and formal aspects, all of the works in this program exhibit the shared concern among media artists regarding the increasing social controls being placed on the lived urban experience.
