Bill 158 - Bureaucracy of social control

Bill 158 is a poor replacement for the old provincial film classification act that was struck down for being unconstitutional. The old law provided an exemption for exhibitors like Available Light - this new law does not. Bill 158 requires that Available Light submit all films and videos for classification. Classification by whom, and to what end? This law is meant to regulate pornography and violence in public theatres. Without an exemption for artistic exhibition, it will make us a collective of criminals.

The hot guy with the moustache is Scannex Man. Come to the screening to find out more.

Imagine how many artists' films and videos would suddenly become R-rated! Or banned altogether for public exhibition, maybe.

If all work had to be submitted to a classification board, would this mean that artists using found footage and copyrighted material would get 'detected'?

Passing this kind of regulation really would put artist's film and video into the "underground," at least for those who don't care to have their work graded and assessed outside of the screening room.
