Off Grid is an arts presentation devoted to the margins of urban culture, including graffiti, gangs, consumer excess, detritus, and street interventions. The project will explore alternatives to and subversions of mainstream culture through a thought-provoking program of performance, visual and media art. It will highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of metropolitan life, examining ideas of inclusion and exclusion, collaboration and intervention, consumption and waste in the context of public space and community. A diverse range of local, national and international artists practicing in various media will participate in both on- and off-site events. An exhibition in the contemporary galleries of the Ottawa Art Gallery will feature artworks that respond to the nature of urban living such as the effects of consumerism, the structuring of communities, collaboration and intervention, and sustainable cohabitation. A program of off-site public performance and interventions will consider similar themes while engaging directly with the public.

We are indebted to the ongoing contributions of major funding bodies, such as the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, as well as special support from the Canadian Art Foundation (Youth Arts Bursary Program), Arts Presentation Canada (Canadian Heritage), Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, The New RO, Les Suites Hotel Ottawa, Trudel Hardware and Shanghai Restaurant. The Ottawa Art Gallery also gratefully acknowledges the continuing support of The Ottawa Citizen, Heritage Brewers Limited, Novotel Ottawa Hotel, and the collaboration of Artengine.
