Description of the December 2008 Workshop:
Orientalism and You?
with artist Gerry Shikatani
Artist Gerry Shikatani will lead an informal discussion stimulated by the exhibition Orientalism & Ephemera. Participants will explore various perceptions and meanings of "Oriental" and suggest objects, images, and personal experiences that are associated as "Oriental". Working together, students will use a media or medium of choice (poems, anecdotes, photos, drawings, etc.) to contribute to a multi-sensory group "mosaic" expressing "Orientalism". This workshop is offered in both French and English.
Gerry Shikatani has authored several books of poetry and a collection of stories, and has performed internationally as a text-sound performance artist. Shikatani is equally known as a freelance culinary critic and a writer specializing in gastronomy and travel in Spain. He has been a writing teacher and mentor, working with professional writers as well as high school students through Writers-in-Electronic-Residence (WIER).
