There is a haunting and elusive quality to the work of France Choinière. The medium is photography, but the photographs have been manipulated and their surfaces altered; the chosen subject is essentially portraiture, yet the figures that emerge are anonymous and unidentified; the viewer in turn becomes the object of the gaze emanating from those arrested images, drawn into the dual role of observer and observed. $15 |
