Peleg Franklin Brownell lived and worked in the capital for many years, and his influence in his own lifetime as a painter and teacher was considerable. Brownell was born in 1857 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He received his artistic training first in Boston at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, and then in Paris at the Académie Julian. In 1887, he took the position of headmaster at the Ottawa School of Art, and enjoyed a teaching career there until 1937.
