Join us for a collective reading and discussion of “The Empire Strikes Back: A Posttranssexual Manifesto” by Sandy Stone. No previous knowledge of the text is necessary. This is a free event and registration is not required. Refreshments will be served.
This influential text was written in 1987 in direct response to feminist discourse that excluded and was hostile towards transgender experience. A literary rallying cry, Stone’s manifesto spoke back and helped to mobilize the North American cultural and intellectual Trans* movement we know today. It presents a brief history of transgender peoples and is essential reading for anyone interested in Trans* Studies.
The reading will be facilitated by Ottawa-based artist Cara Tierney, whose work questions the role of gender and its relationship to the material body.
Presented in partnership with the Ottawa Public Library.
